Anakin headed for the dark side of the Force, becoming Sith Lord Darth Vader. His beloved wife, Padmé Amidala, without his knowledge, gave birth to twins, Luke and Leia, but she died in childbirth. To hide from Vader the information that his children had survived, Leia became a Princess on the planet Alderaan, and Luke was raised by his uncles in the desert Tatooine, where he came under the protection of Obi-Wan, who later became his master.
